Your Friendly & Helpful Tax Assessor-Collector

Leo Vasquez, the Harris Country Tax Assessor-Collector was Leo Vasquezour guest speaker this week. His office has the responsibility of taking information from the Harris County Appraisal District and the various taxing jusrisdictions and calualting what you tax bill should be. They then send you the bill and collect the taxes for distribution to the different jurisdictions.

The process works like this:

  • Taxable property value comes from the Harris County Appraisal District

  • Tax rates come from the various taxing jurisdictions (City of Houston, Houston Community College, Harris County, Harris County Flood Control District, Houston ISD, etc.)

  • Your tax bill is calculated by multiplying the taxable value by the tax rate for each applicable jurisdiction and adding these totals together.

If you feel the appraised value for your property is too high you have the right to appeal...find out more here.

The Harris County Tax Assessor-Collector's office also handles accepting payment for auto license renewals, coordinating the voter registration process and accepting payment for a number of other taxes and licenses. It is really quite complex and can be confusing...but Mr. Vasquez is working to make the office more taxpayer friendly. Lean more at the Harris Country Tax Office website.

Guests, Visitors & Other Good News

Marty Morrison community outreach and communications coordinator from the Tax Assessor-Collector's office joined us for the meeting this week. Marty is the person how book Leo Vasquez on the "Rubber Chicken Circuit."

Karen Blakeman reports that Paige is doing well in her recovery from surgery on her ankle. She even has a rental Harley for some of her transportation needs (it's actually a wheelchair).

Everybody expressed sincere "THANKS" to Ken and Sabrina Marsh for allowibng the club to use their home for our Holiday Party this year. For a last minute venue change and a true "pot luck" menu - it was SUPERIOR! Well done troops. The food was delicious...the gift exchange was hilarious...and the comradier was FABULOUS!

A Loss In The Rotary Family

Last week our club lost Carolyn King, wife of club member Jon King and the hostess for the club's Holiday Party for some 25 years. She had been hositalized for 6 weeks following some heart issues and surgery. Carolyn is someone special to every member of our club and she will be missed!

A memorial service for Carolyn was held Sunday, December 13th, and was well attended by family, friends, church members and members of the Rotary Club of Sharpstown.
