Club Donates to Project Hope
Our special guest on March 27th was Sheila Howieson, Mentor Program Director for Project Hope at Lee High School.
Project Hope of Houston, a 501(c)(3) non-profit organization, was born from the determination of a senior teacher who recognized the latent talents of many of the students that she witnessed spiraling toward dropping-out, underachieving, and struggling to find reason and purpose. She realized that the existing counseling support systems need assistance and though reaching out in to the community and attracting successful individuals willing to spend an hour or more each week mentoring students would fill the gap.
As a result of this program mentors have inspired hundred of "at-risk" students to redirect their efforts, expands their horizons, graduate from high school and pursue higher education.
The Rotary Club of Sharpstown became involved with Project Hope at the urging of our Past-President and Past District Governor Bob Fitts. One of Bob's major focal points for everything he did within Rotary was the education of our youth. Bob passed away in 2002, but the involvement of the Club's members continues and grows each year.
It was, in remembrance of Bob Fitts and in recognition of the efforts being put forth by Sheila Howeison and all the volunteer mentors, that the Rotary Club of Sharpstown presented Sheila with a check for $1,000 in support of the programs of Project Hope.
